NEW WEBSITE, "DOWNSIZING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT" DEBUTS

The Cato Institute today announced the launch of "Downsizing the Federal Government," a new website aimed at providing policymakers, media and the public with comprehensive data on federal spending.

The federal government is running massive all-time record budget deficits, spending too much, and heading toward a financial crisis. Without a change of direction in Washington, average working families will be faced with huge tax increases and a lower standard of living. This makes the launching of this website especially timely and applicable.

"Downsizinggovernment.org" is designed to help policymakers and the public understand where federal funds are being spent and how to reform each government department. It describes the failings of federal agencies and identifies specific programs to cut. It also discusses the systematic reasons why government programs are often obsolete, mismanaged, or otherwise dysfunctional.

The site spotlights the constant and extensive waste of taxpayer dollars by executive agencies. "Some people have lofty visions about how government spending can help society," says Cato scholar Chris Edwards. "But the essays on this website put aside such bedtime stories about how government programs are supposed to work, and instead focus on how they actually work in the real world."

"Downsizing the Federal Government" is a project of the Cato Institute. Scholars at Cato believe that cutting the federal budget would enlarge personal freedom, increase growth and prosperity, and leave a positive fiscal legacy to the next generation.

Chris Edwards is director of tax policy at the Cato Institute and was formerly senior economist on the Joint Economic Committee of Congress. Edwards is also the author of a book by the same name, "Downsizing the Federal Government."

  1. While CATO's new web site concerning downsizing the federal government is very encouraging, I wish that the site would have at least mentioned Section 8 of Article I and the 10th Amendment. After all, while downsizing the feds is a step in the right direction, we really need to force the feds to return government power to the states which the corrupt feds have been wrongly usurping from the states for the last 100 years.
