WRONG PRIORITIES: DEMOCRATS SHOW URGENCY FOR MORE "STIMULUS" SPENDING, NOT CREATING JOBS

Democrats in Washington are still reeling from last Friday’s troubling jobs report, preparing to push for more of the same flawed tax-and-spend policies while showing little inclination to help small businesses create jobs. Unfortunately, spokesmen for the White House and Senate Democrats have already dismissed Republican solutions for creating jobs. That’s an awfully disappointing – and defensive – response from a party with a disastrous economic record, a party that many Americans say “is doing far too little to help average people, especially the unemployed and underemployed, weather hard times.” The following piece from last night’s Fox News’ Special Report compares Republican solutions for creating jobs to Democrats’ push for more spending, taxing, and borrowing:

WASHINGTON DEMOCRATS SHOW URGENCY FOR MORE “STIMULUS” SPENDING, NOT CREATING JOBS:

Proposals to create jobs add up to second stimulus. Confronted with big job losses and no sign the U.S. economy is ready to stand on its own, Democrats are working on a growing list of relief efforts, leaving for later how to pay for them, or whether even to bother. … Taken together, the proposals look a lot like another economic stimulus package, though congressional leaders don't want to call it that.” (Associated Press, 10/8/09)

Americans Say Washington Doing “Far Too Little” to Create Jobs. “…[A] great many are telling pollsters that Washington is doing far too little to help average people, especially the unemployed and underemployed, weather hard times. Regardless of whether that criticism is valid, the perception that the Obama administration and the Democratic-controlled Congress are missing in action on jobs is a huge problem for their party.” (Charlie Cook, National Journal, 10/10/09 issue)

Democrats ‘Dismiss’ Republican Solutions to Create Jobs. “GOP proposals include a tax deduction for small businesses equal to 20% of their income, letting small businesses band together in associations to buy health insurance more cheaply, curbing civil lawsuits and lowering individual income-tax rates. Mr. Manley, [spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV)], dismissed those as old conservative ideas that aren't likely to attract much Democratic support.” (Wall Street Journal, 10/8/09)

HOUSE REPUBLICANS’ SOLUTIONS TO HELP SMALL BUSINESSES CREATE JOBS:

• Allow small businesses to take a tax deduction equal to 20 percent of their income.

• Let small businesses join together to purchase health insurance for their workers the way large businesses and labor unions do.

• Enact genuine legal reform and policies that incentivize wellness to reduce health care costs for small businesses.

• Lower taxes for all taxpayers by reducing the current 15 percent rate to 10 percent and reducing the current 10 percent rate to 5 percent. This will provide an immediate increase in income to every taxpaying family in America and free up capital to help small businesses hire more workers.

• Expand health savings accounts (HSAs) to provide additional flexibility to small businesses in providing health care to their employees.

• Increase the net operating loss carry back from 2 to 5 years to provide struggling employers with additional resources to keep their doors open.
