Carly Fiorina delivered the weekly Republican address on the topic of the current health care reform bill being debated in the U. S. Senate and across America.
Fiorina, herself a recent, successful cancer survivor, delivered a genuine, heartfelt speech that came across as refreshingly apolitical. In fact, I don't believe she mentioned either political party or any specific politician. Fiorina unselfishly didn't even mention that she is challenging ultra-liberal, California Senator Barbara Boxer, in the next election. Rather than point fingers and sling political attacks, Fiorina shared her personal experience in being diagnosed with, and beating, breast cancer.
She explains why the recent recommendation on mammograms from a government-run panel was so troubling, especially because costs were the deciding factor in the decision. Fiorina noted that the reason the U. S. has the highest cancer survival in the world is because the U. S. doesn't have government-mandated rationing like much of the world does.
Fiorina made the point that, "The health care bill now being debated in the Senate explicitly empowers this very task force to influence future coverage and preventive care."
She rhetorically asked the question everyone already knows the answer to (Hint: It's "Yes"), "Will a bureaucrat determine that my life isn't worth saving?"
"Do we really want government bureaucrats, rather than doctors, dictating how we prevent and treat something like breast cancer?" she asked appropriately, knowing that whenever the government gets involved, they usurp control.
Fiorina, without saying so, very elegantly and tactfully communicated the most accurate description of government-run health care that I've heard:
"The Efficiency of the Postal Service with the Compassion of the I.R.S."
