RED SKELTON'S PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

Red Skelton's Pledge of Allegiance from his TV show in 1969. Red was one of the funniest comedians of all-time, but this brought tears to my eyes. I'm such a softy when it comes to patriotic matters.
I remember watching Red as a youngster with my Dad, so it brings back some special memories, as well. Red Skelton was a great American and had a unique comedy style that I haven't seen replicated.
Seeing Red's Pledge of Allegiance, reminds me that I need to expose my kids to old Red. It would be a shame if their generation was robbed of the opportunity to see him. They don't make 'em like Red Skelton anymore.

  1. These words were not added until about ten years after I learned the Pledge of Allegiance, which was composed by a Christin Socialist (intended only as an observation, not a criticism), so to me, they are not imperative to the Pledge. I still recite the Pledge the way I learned it, back in the mid forties, which was before these words were added in June of 1954. Yes, I am a Christian, but as a strong supporter of the Freedom of Religion portion of our Constitution, I don't see the necessity of this addition. I have not heard of any wide spread action of any group trying to remove these words, but if they do, then the Pledge will simply return to the way it was for some years prior to 1954, which I do not see as a tragedy. Reciting the Pledge and being a Christian are not the things that prevent me from being a selfish person, a traitor, or a criminal, nor do those words make me honor my country more. My understanding of the difference between right and wrong serves that purpose, as it should do for everyone.
