TV COVERAGE OF GLENN BECK'S "RESTORING HONOR" TO BE PROVIDED BY C-SPAN

C-SPAN will be providing television coverage of Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally at the Lincoln Memorial this Saturday, August 28. Coverage begins 7:00 am PST, and 10 am ET.
The event was announced by Beck, in November 2009, in an open letter in which he unveiled, "The Plan":
"I have begun meeting with some of the best minds in the country that believe in limited government, maximum freedom and the values of our Founders. I am developing a 100 year plan. I know that the bipartisan corruption in Washington that has brought us to this brink and it will not be defeated easily. It will require unconventional thinking and a radical plan to restore our nation to the maximum freedoms we were supposed to have been protecting, using only the battlefield of ideas."
"On August 28, 2010, I ask you, your family and neighbors to join me at the feet of Abraham Lincoln on the National Mall for the unveiling of The Plan and the birthday of a new national movement to restore our great country."

AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT

From Investor's Daily comes this passionate and poignant open letter to President Obama from a regular "John Q. Citizen", Jeffrey S. Howard. Howard, is a Marine Corps veteran and University of Washington graduate, who for twenty years was a heavy-equipment supervisor, and is now a developer with projects in Washington and Oregon. Howard's open letter captures the concern, anger, anxiety, frustration, confusion, fear, and yes, anger, that untold millions of other patriotic Americans are feeling today. I started highlighting key sentences for emphasis, but found myself highlighting more than I left unhighlighted, so I scratched that service.
In today's dangerous world, we need a president with experience, leadership and courage. Unfortunately, you have shown us little of those traits.
Your childhood and younger years denied you the opportunity to grow up as an American man, and that is no fault of your own. Unfortunately, your lack of empathy for and experience of a traditional American upbringing has left you out of touch with those of us who grew up learning the traditions and work ethic of our predecessors.
You have never accepted the honor of military service, or held and survived in any sort of entry-level working position. You are bereft of many of the basic building blocks of a true American personality and worldview.
You have never experienced the icy hand of fear caressing your gut during a firefight when your very survival from second to second depends on your luck, wits, fellow troopers and the grace of God. You have never sweated out a payroll when your receivables are late.
You've missed the rewarding feeling of flogging a loaded truck all night to deliver a load 500 miles away at 7 a.m. You never shoveled cow manure for less than minimum wage to earn enough for a rattletrap car. You missed out on greasing dump trucks on the night shift, and never had the opportunity to start out cleaning restrooms and sweeping floors in a factory.
Your education was in the law, and you ignored any opportunity to absorb the lessons of history or the theories of economics. You have never experienced the law of the jungle in the private sector.
While you play golf and basketball and surround yourself with "the swells" enjoying concerts in the People's House, those of us in the general public dine on Spam and Costco burgers. I can't put my wife on a 747 and send her to Spain so she can be ready to spend 10 days on Martha's Vineyard when she gets back. She works seven days a week and so do I — spreading four full- and part-time jobs between us to make ends meet.
I watch in pain while my business venture slides into oblivion and my small IRA erodes as your economic policies push the nation into a double-dip recession. This economy is locking up again, and you cannot blame former President Bush. The great construction jobs I created are ending while you pour trillions in borrowed money into the public sector to buy votes. I blame you personally for appointing the ship of fools you have as Cabinet officials and advisers.
You are repeating the gross mistakes of Japan in the '90s and the Roosevelt administration in the '30s — both of which failed and lengthened severe economic problems for a decade or more. You are intentionally smothering our private sector with regulations, taxes and mandates at the same time you squander the wages and futures of our children and grandkids.
I deplore your continued efforts to divide the greatest nation of immigrants in the world along race and class lines. Pandering to various groups and attempting to set them against other Americans is demagoguery at its worst. I sincerely hope such actions end up damaging you in the end and not our country.
You will leave office with a big pension, Secret Service protection and gold-plated health care for life. I may well end up with 40 years of hard work down the drain, living in a mobile home in the backwoods.
I do not resent you for your good fortune — you worked hard to become president and won the election fair and square. I do, however, despise your policies and the damage they are visiting on our nation, its economy and our future. I have dedicated my remaining years to fighting you and your policies and protecting our children's futures.
I may well end up destroyed financially from the results of your misguided and dangerous actions — but you will never break me psychologically or crush my spirit. I am a Marine, I have a wonderful wife and family, and last but not least, I live in the greatest nation in the world. I shall work to my last breath to keep it that way, and you, sir, shall fail to destroy that dream.

PRINCIPLES VS. POLITICS

Check out my recent article on Red County, entitled, Principles vs. Politics. Fresh from my unsuccessful bid to become a congressman, I share some of my thoughts, in reflection, that have surfaced. Here are a couple of excerpts:
  • Do you think the Founding Fathers thought that way, or would accept working in such a political system? Did they, upon pondering how to communicate their position on an issue, verbalize their statement based on focus groups, political positioning or pandering?
  • ...why do we either at worst, expect, or at best, tolerate, today’s candidates running their campaigns in such, if we’re honest with ourselves, unprincipled ways? Is it so that they can get elected, winning at all costs? If we continue to elect candidates who run campaigns this way, how in the world can we expect them to be principled once elected? Do we think that they’ll be, fresh from disregarding their principles to get elected, magically reversing course and be able to be principled and incorruptible once elected? Do we think they’ll be able to then stand strong on tough issues against all of the pressures they’ll face after they take office?

A POST-ELECTION MESSAGE FROM MATTHEW BURKE TO "THE BURKE BRIGADE"

Less Government = More Freedom

With the latest round of reporting, it's obvious that it's not possible for us to receive enough votes to advance to the general election. While I'm obviously very disappointed that we did not finish in the top two in last night's primary, I'm proud of what we accomplished in our completely grassroots campaign. I got in this race not because I wanted to or for any self-aggrandizement, but because I felt that I had to. We started and ended with the same, clear, straightforward, and concise core principle and message: Less Government = More Freedom.

Our U.S. Constitution, and therefore our freedom and prosperity, is under attack by our own out of control, power hungry politicians and bureaucrats, and I wasn't going to sit idly by and watch without doing whatever I could to fight back. My Dad used to say while I was growing up that, "One of these days people are going to get fed up". I had no idea what he was talking about at the time, but I certainly do now.

At times, running for office for the first time, realizing the gargantuan task that in itself is, as well as putting both my career on hold, draining my already highly strained personal finances, and more importantly, taking time away from my family, caused me more than once to ask myself, "Am I crazy (I think we know the answer to that one)?", or, "What have I gotten myself into?". Whenever facing such questions, I'd think about the Founding Fathers and all that they unselfishly and courageously sacrificed. I'd consider the great and unique Constitutional principles upon which they founded the United States, and how they're slipping away. I'd think about my hero, Ronald Reagan, his passion, his optimism, his sharp wit, and his unbridled love and optimism of the American ideal. Lastly, I'd remember the reason why I was running. I want my three children, and someday grandchildren, to have the same freedom and opportunity to succeed that I've enjoyed.

Now for a little analysis of the election results. Scanning the election results, I am pleased that we received a higher percentage of the vote than many other first time candidates, some who spent hundreds of thousands of dollars more than we had available, in both the Congressional and Senatorial races. We were outspent by many multiples, much more than the margin of our loss. Without the benefits of having the funds to run TV ads on FOX News, prime-time radio ads on Christian radio, Rush Limbaugh, and all of the local conservative talk shows, without being able to do direct mail, paid on-line advertising, or robo calls, in fact, without the money to do any type of paid advertising whatsoever, without any prior political experience or connections, without any prior name identification, without any establishment endorsements, and while entering the race much later than ideal, we were able to gain, so far, 14,000 votes (update as of 8/22: 19,300) in the first district, with some additional votes still rolling over in for probably at least a couple of more days.

Upon entering this race, I was told that politics is all about the money. That is largely still the very unfortunate reality. From day one, I said that if we could raise enough money to get our message out, we would win. We didn't, and therefore, we didn't.

Taking these challenges into consideration takes the edge off of the disappointment that we weren't able to go to the next level. You can follow the vote tallying here.

Congratulations are in order for my Republican counterpart, James Watkins, who'll be pairing off in the general election against long-term, Democrat incumbent Jay Inslee. Jay is an entrenched, well-funded career politician who will be difficult to defeat given the hefty margin of his victory. James ran a tough, aggressive, organized campaign, did an excellent job of raising money, and of receiving the backing of much of the local party establishment, both before and after I entered the race. He campaigned hard and deserves credit for it.

A huge thank you to you Burke Brigade volunteers. You gave your time, energy, and when you were able, your hard earned money, towards our campaign to restore constitutionally limited government. I can't put into words how grateful and honored I am for your support. I'd like to thank those who have contacted me in the last two days to thank me for running, and encourage me to run again in the future. The bright outcome for me, on a personal level, has been the opportunity to meet so many exceptional people, like yourselves, who I otherwise wouldn't have had the pleasure to meet.

A special thanks to my amazing bride, Jennifer. She has been amazingly supportive and worked tirelessly on the campaign, wearing multiple hats. There is no way I could have done this without her and the support, approval, and prayers of the rest of my family. Our kids have been great. One of my special memories was the feeling I had when they asked if they could go out and wave signs for me.

As I mentioned, many people have asked me if I'll run again. While I take that question as a major compliment, and while I definitely wouldn't rule it out, it's way too early for me to be able to answer that question, even if I could. I know I still want to be involved in politics on some level where I can make an impact, however, I have no idea exactly what that will look like going forward.

I'm going to take a couple of weeks off to recoup, enjoy time with my family and four dogs (all of whom still love me despite the election results), then return to my profession as a personal financial planner. I'll also soon go back to writing on the political blog I started in late 2008, The Freedom Post, which I converted to the campaign's blog during the race. I'll use it, as I did before the race, to provide an outlet to vent my frustrations with the current sad state of political affairs. You can always check in there if you want to know what's on my mind. I'll also continue writing articles on the popular conservative website, Red County. I became a contributer to Red County during the middle of the campaign, about 15 weeks ago.

Even though we were not victorious, the same principles and beliefs that I started this race with remain completely intact. I'm proud of that. God Bless and Jennifer and I hope to see you all at a local Tea Party or other event where patriotic Americans gather to make a difference.

AMERICANS FOR PROSPERITY LAUNCHES NEW AD CAMPAIGN RIDICULING OBAMA'S "STIMULUS" PROGRAM

No wonder President Obama went "Saul Alinsky" on Americans for Prosperity! AFP just released above video on government spending, focusing on the biggest boondoggle in the history of mankind, Obama's $862 billion Stimulus (aka: "Porkulus").
Here are some interesting facts from AFP Foundation's SpendingCrisis.com site that you ought to tell your friends and family about. Please take a minute to copy, paste, and send to your personal email list:

· This year, the federal government will borrow about $12,500 per household to pay for its spending. [Source]

· Despite claiming that the $862 billion stimulus package would keep unemployment below 8 percent, it is hovering around 9.5 percent with few signs of improving.

· Public employees earned more than $120,000 per year in salary and benefits on average, compared to about $60,000 in the private sector.[Source]

· From anti-poverty spending programs to defense and education, the federal government now spends a record $30,543 per household. [Source].

While all of these numbers are staggering, the last one is mind-boggling!

MATTHEW BURKE AND JAMES WATKINS ON THE FUNCTION OF GOVERNMENT



“Kitsap We the People” conducted video interviews of candidates that were conducted closed room, one candidate at a time, the candidates did not know the questions in advance, and neither candidate was in the room at the same time. They were asked the exact same questions. I would highly encourage you to watch the videos for the WA-01 candidates, my husband Matthew Burke and his primary opponent, James Watkins.
Watkins' answer to the first question demonstrates a lack of basic knowledge in regards to not only the function of government, but what is written in the U.S. Constitution. Watkins claims that Constitution states that the function of government, “is primarily to create an environment for Americans to thrive.” Nowhere in the Constitution is there verbage anywhere remotely close to that phrase. It’s not there.
Also, Watkins speaks to his belief in the government "creating". If the government "creates", that means it is interfering in matters it shouldn't be. “Creating” is and should be left up to the people. It is not the proper role of government, and in fact opens the door to endless government abuses. This doesn't sound like someone who believes in "less government" to me. Here are the quotes:
QUESTION: What is the function of the federal government?
WATKINS: "The function of the federal government, I think, is to do exactly what the Constitution says, which is primarily to create an environment for Americans to thrive."
BURKE: "Oh, that’s an easy one. To protect our rights. The Declaration of Independence."
From the Declaration of Independence:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed."

MY STAND ON THE 2ND AMENDMENT AND ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

In the past few days, we've had several inquiries as to where I stand on two important issues, the Second Amendment and Illegal Immigration. Below is where I stand on these issues:

SECOND AMENDMENT:

In regards to the 2nd Amendment, as with the rest of the U.S. Constitution, I believe it says what it means and means what it says. Reading what the Founding Fathers said about it makes me perplexed as to why it’s controversial. They were extremely clear:

"Americans [have] the right and advantage of being armed -- unlike citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust people with arms." - James Madison

"No freeman shall be debarred the use of arms..." - Thomas Jefferson

"The great principle is that every man be armed....everyone who is able may have a gun." - Patrick Henry

The Founders knew that having an armed citizenry was the last defense against government tyranny, which has been the rule, not the exception, throughout history. Therefore, we must strongly fight to preserve the 2nd Amendment as written and intended.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION:

I am wholeheartedly for legal immigration, but vehemently opposed to illegal immigration. We should enforce existing laws and do whatever it takes to secure our borders. My Republican primary opponent, James Watkins, and I differ greatly on this issue (and a host of other issues). He has publicly stated numerous times that he supports a “pathway to citizenship” (as does President Obama) as his solution to the massive problem we have with illegal immigration. He reiterated his position during our recent debate on John Carlson’s radio program.

We should not reward lawbreakers. Providing those here illegally with a “pathway to citizenship” not only does just that, but it encourages more illegal immigration. We should enforce existing laws and do whatever it takes to secure our borders. Giving people here illegally a “pathway to citizenship” spits in the face of the millions of Americans who immigrated here legally.

I completely support the Arizona immigration law. They have every right to protect their borders if the federal government isn’t going to. Rather than conflicting with federal immigration law, the Arizona law reinforces the existing federal immigration law that the federal government is failing to enforce. The federal lawsuit against Arizona is bogus. The original objective by President Obama and the Justice Department was that the law would lead to racial profiling, but since the law specifically makes racial profiling illegal, they realized that they couldn’t win those grounds. They then changed the topic of their lawsuit, accusing Arizona of usurping federal power (The states created the federal government, not the other way around.), a charge that is also not credible.

Lately, it has been discussed that there should be consideration given to changing the 14th Amendment. Section 1, Clause 1, which says:

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.

However, the author of this clause, Senator Jacob M. Howard, stated, in reference to the Amendment,

“This will not, of course, include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the family of ambassadors, or foreign ministers accredited to the Government of the United States, but will include every other class of persons.”
This is clear. If you can't believe the author, then who can you believe? The 14th Amendment was rightfully written to make slaves, who were born in the United States, citizens.

For many years, this clause has been abused to give citizenship to children born in the United States of illegal alien parents. These children, upon reaching the age of majority, can then use their citizenship, although wrongfully misconstrued, to facilitate the U.S. citizenship of their extended families ("anchor babies"), who otherwise would not be eligible.

If this portion of the 14th Amendment wasn't so badly being misinterpreted, changing the Constitution wouldn't be necessary. However, since it is, changing the Constitution, strengthening and clarifying the language to return it to its original intention, may be the only way to rectify the problem. This wouldn't, as some have said, "change the Constitution", but would simply correct the abusive misinterpretation and restore the original meaning. I would be in favor of this.

HUGE DIFFERENCES ON ISSUES BETWEEN MATTHEW BURKE AND JAMES WATKINS IN WA-01

One of the most frequently asked questions I get asked is, "what's the difference between you and James Watkins (the other Republican in my race) on the issues". In the earlier stages of the campaign, it wasn't so clear what those differences were. However, as the campaign has progressed, as more interviews have been given, more speeches given, and more questions asked, the clarity and magnitude of the differences are immense. The gap is so wide now, ranging from issues like amnesty, global warming, government spending, and dedication to the U.S. Constitution (for starters), that I cannot answer it in a thirty second sound bite.

CAMPAIGN FOR LIBERTY RELEASES 2010 CANDIDATE QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS. JAMES WATKINS DODGES KEY QUESTIONS.

Campaign for Liberty, just released their candidate questionnaires for the 1st congressional district of Washington State (my race), and have published the answers on their website. Understandably, far-left incumbent, Jay Inslee, didn't come down from his perch long enough to participate.
James Watkins, the other Republican in the race, did partially participate, but left two questions blank (Q's #10 & #15: I guess voters will have to guess his position on those two questions). Either he doesn't feel these issues are important enough to answer, or he is afraid to answer tough questions on controversial issues that may upset the party establishment he's so strongly endorsed by. One would expect seasoned politicians and bureaucrats to be evasive, but for a "newcomer" to be such evasive sounds a lot like "politics as usual".
Watkins also voted "No" on questions #8 & #13, indicating he would NOT support U.S. withdrawal from the corrupt United Nations, and that he would NOT vote to eliminate the IRS.
