NANNY OF THE MONTH: BARACK OBAMA

Last month, Reason.tv recognized Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) as our nation's most irritating scold after he busted out a sneak attack on the the world's oldest profession.

This time top dishonors go to the Drug Warrior-in-Chief Barack Obama, whose DEA banned fake pot, thwarted a scientist's decade-long campaign to study marijuana, and raided dispensaries in Montana and California—all in one month!

(Seems like only yesterday when Obama promised he wouldn't waste Justice Department resources raiding medical marijuana dispensaries.)

Presenting the Nanny of the Month for March 2011: President Barack Obama (with DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart grabbing a dishonorable mention)!

Citizens Against Government Waste Names Senator Harry Reid Porker of the Month

Today, Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) bestowed upon Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) the March “Porker of the Month” Award for his absurd belief that a federally-funded Cowboy Poetry Festival in Elko, Nevada (pop. 17,000) constitutes essential government spending.  The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), which allots a small part of its $146 million budget to the festival, was defunded under H.R. 1, the Full-Year Continuing Resolution for fiscal year 2011, which Sen. Reid helped defeat in the Senate.  On March 8, 2011, he described the proposed termination in a Senate floor speech as “mean-spirited,” stating that were it not for NEH’s federal money, the Cowboy Poetry Festival and “the tens of thousands of people who come there every year, would not exist.”

One day after Sen. Reid made his preposterous statement, Western Folklife Center Executive Director Charlie Seemann commented that the NEH funds just seven percent of the festival, and that he and his fellow cowboys “could certainly continue if we lose that funding.”  That’s the individual, entrepreneurial spirit that has made America great, and it contrasts sharply with the attitude of Sen. Reid, who believes that taxpayers should pay for everything, even if a program can and should stand on its own.

In tribute to Sen. Reid and the Cowboy Poetry Festival, CAGW has decided to try its hand at a bit of verse.  As Robert Frost wrote, “a poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong.”  So we begin:

Dollar’s Inferno

Midway upon the journey of his life,
Reid found himself in Washington, D.C.
Once there he gathered money from us all,
Convinced the world would call it charity.

Kubla Con

In Carson Mr. Reid began
To guzzle from the public trough;
Engorged with pork, each term he ran
With gifts to Special Interest Man,
Which ticked the taxpayers off.

Inflation Comes at Us Like a Knuckleball

MUST READ:  Inflation Comes at Us Like a Knuckleball: "By its very definition, fiat money is something created out of thin air: the word 'fiat' is Latin for 'let it be done' (as in, by decree). But the convenience that such a currency system offers central bankers is paid at the expense of savers. With nothing of real or lasting value on which to anchor, the value of fiat currencies can always blow away like ashes on a windy day."

Godzilla Hedge Funds Fannie Mae, Freddie Were ‘Guaranteed to Fail’

Godzilla Hedge Funds Fannie Mae, Freddie Were ‘Guaranteed to Fail’: Books - Bloomberg: "For Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the figure to remember is 79.9 -- the percent ownership that the U.S. Treasury took in each when it seized control in 2008. If the stakes were 80 percent, the mortgage companies would land on the federal budget, as we’re reminded in “Guaranteed to Fail,” a valuable book on how two quasi-public companies became “the world’s largest and most leveraged hedge funds.”

Kiss all the political posturing about the U.S. public debt ceiling goodbye: With Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac’s debts tacked on, the total would lurch to $15.84 trillion, well over the current limit of $14.29 trillion, the authors say."

On Inflation, Don’t Believe Your Eyes (or the Fed's)

On inflation, don’t believe your eyes Rex Nutting - MarketWatch: "You don’t have to be a gold bug to wonder if the Federal Reserve has completely lost its mind.

Can’t the Fed see what’s happening to the prices of commodities, such as gasoline, grains, metals and other raw materials? Is the Fed blind to the inflation that’s raging all around?

Yet, the Fed still clings to its easy-money policy, insisting that the fragile nature of the economic recovery demands its continued support. It’s expected that the Fed will keep buying Treasury bonds for three more months as part of its Quantitative Easing 2.0 campaign, and will keep short-term interest rates near zero “for an extended period” in an effort to keep the economy growing.

In other words, the Fed will keep pumping cheap money into the economy until the patient can stand on its own."

Embarking on a New Age of Freedom

Embarking on a New Age of Freedom - Armstrong Williams: "Indeed, perhaps the single greatest invention of our time (internet) has changed the way we collect, process, analyze and share information; from the most meaningless such as a casserole recipe, to state secrets pilfered by rogue military personnel and scattered like ashes to the four winds. Not since the telegraph in the early 19th century has information moved so rapidly and efficiently."

Voting with Their Feet - Thomas Sowell

Voting with Their Feet - Thomas Sowell - Townhall Conservative: "When you break it down by race and ethnicity, it is all too painfully clear what is happening. Both whites and blacks are leaving California, the poster state for the liberal, welfare-state and nanny-state philosophy.

Whites are also fleeing the big northeastern liberal, welfare states like Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, as well as the same kinds of states in the midwest, such as Michigan, Ohio and Illinois.

Although California has long been a prime destination of Asian immigrants and the homes of their descendants, the 2010 census shows a striking increase in the Asian American population of Nevada, more so than any other state. Nevada is adjacent to California but has no income tax nor the hostile climate for business that California maintains.

The movement of the black population-- especially educated young blacks-- is the most striking of all..."

FACT: The toothless 1977 regulations fully expired in July 1997, when President Clinton rewrote them to toughen CRA enforcement as part of a crusade to close the 'mortgage gap' between blacks and whites."

Students Who Get It! - John Stossel - Townhall Conservative: "This is a common canard known as the 'broken window' fallacy. The 19th-century French free-market writer Frederic Bastiat exposed it with the story of a boy who breaks a shop window, prompting some townspeople to look at the bright side: fixing the window will stimulate economic activity in the town. The fallacy, of course, is that had the window not been broken, the shopkeeper would have spent the money in more productive ways."

Value of the American Dollar
"If the American people ever allow private banks to control (the Federal Reserve is a "private" institution) the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks...will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered... The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs." -- Thomas Jefferson

Why Liberals Hate Clarence Thomas and Sarah Palin

Why Liberals Hate Clarence Thomas and Sarah Palin - Star Parker - Townhall Conservative: "Thomas and Palin are particularly threatening to liberals because their lives fly in the face of liberal mythology. According to this mythology, the essential and ongoing struggle in our nation is a power struggle of interests between “haves” and “have-nots” rather than an ongoing struggle for human freedom.

According to this mythology, there is an elite class of “haves” who, by virtue of fate and birth, control power and wealth. They are conservative because their only interest is to keep things as they are."

Ponzi Schemes, Bernie Madoff, and Social Security

Ponzi Schemes - John C. Goodman - Townhall Conservative: "...let’s consider why Bernie Madoff is in the hoosegow. Madoff told investors he was investing their funds in real assets, when in fact he was not. He secretly used their funds for personal consumption and to pay off other investors. Either figuratively or imaginatively, Madoff wrote IOUs to himself, all backed by the full faith and credit of Bernie Madoff. Maybe in the beginning he fully intended to pay off. But that’s beside the point. Inducing people to give you money with this sort of lie is criminal fraud. It’s against the law.

Like most government-sponsored retirement programs in the world today, our Social Security system is pay-as-you-go. All payroll tax revenues are spent — the very minute, the very hour, the very day they are received by the U.S. Treasury. Most of these revenues are spent on benefits for current retirees. Any additional amount is spent in other ways.

But there is no funding of future benefits. No money is being stashed away in bank vaults. No investments are made in real assets."

The Floating Dollar as a Threat to Property Rights

Hillsdale College - Imprimis Issue: "The creation of dollars, and the status of the dollar as legal tender, is a matter of fiat. Its value is adjusted by the mandarins at the Federal Reserve, depending on variables they only sometimes share with the rest of the world. This would have floored the Framers of our Constitution, who granted Congress the power to coin money and regulate its value in the same sentence in which they gave it the power to fix the standard of weights and measures..."

Republican Liberty Caucus Condemns U.S. Military Action Against Libya

Attacks Violate Constitutional Requirement to Obtain Approval from Congress

Contact: Dave Nalle, RLC Chairman
WASHINGTON, DC — The Republican Liberty Caucus (RLC) National Committee has voted unanimously to condemn the Obama Administration’s military action against Libya.
The RLC resolution notes that the situation in Libya does not constitute a direct threat to the United States and that military action has not been authorized by Congress as required by the War Powers Act and the United States Constitution.
“At a time when we should be cutting back our foreign military involvement, the president’s action is as irresponsible as it is unconstitutional.” said RLC National Chair Dave Nalle of Austin, Texas.
As RLC member and Congressman from Michigan’s Third District Justin Amash recently noted,
“It’s not enough for the President simply to explain military actions in Libya to the American people after the fact — as though we are serfs. When there is no imminent threat to our country, he cannot launch strikes without authorization from th American people, through elected Representatives in Congress. No United Nations resolution or congressional act permits the President to circumvent the Constitution.”
In an interview in the Boston Globe in 2007, then-Senator Barack Obama shared his view on the matter, saying, “The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.” Why are those words any less true today than they were when he spoke them only four years ago?
“President Obama seems to have taken this action solely on the authorization of the United Nations without consideration of the best interests of the United States or the limits which the Constitution places on the power of the president,” said RLC Chairman Dave Nalle. “The greatest threats to the safety of our citizens today are the reckless spending and dangerous fiscal policies of this administration. The President should do what he swore in his oath — uphold the Constitution. Instead, he continues to push a Big Government, freedom-crushing agenda that has not resulted in economic prosperity in our country.”
The Republican Liberty Caucus is working to raise awareness of the problems with United States intervention in Libya. As Congressman Amash observed, “The cost to American taxpayers will be substantial. We cannot spend money we don’t have on a war we don’t need.”
According to RLC Chairman Dave Nalle, “Our state chapters and our nationwide network of activists will be contacting their legislators to remind them of the traditional Republican foreign policy and the party’s historical commitment to constitutionally limited government. Our members demand an immediate end to military action by U.S. forces in Libya,” concluded Nalle.

FOX News Brett Baier Takes on Comedian Jon Stewart

Baier does an excellent job of educating Stewart on the difference between an opinion show (Beck, Hannity, O'Reilly) and an actual news broadcast from a news broadcaster (Baier, Shep Smith, etc.).  I just wish Baier had the opportunity to point out that FOX is the counter-balance to the rest of the mainstream media and it's when you mix your political persuasion into what is supposed to be the hard fact news (the Left's strategy for decades), is when it becomes poisonous.

Center for Freedom and Prosperity Announces Winners of 2010 Free Market Video Contest

The Center for Freedom and Prosperity Foundation (CF&P) has selected the winners of its first annual free market video contest. The contest seeks to identify, encourage, and reward the "new media" policy entrepreneurs with the most compelling messages for liberty.

With entries from dozens of people from numerous countries, the contest successfully motivated individuals across the globe to speak out in their own way for economic freedom.

Celebrity judge and George Mason University economics professor, columnist, radio talk show host and author, Dr. Walter E. Williams was joined by Dan Mitchell of the Cato Institute, Richard Rahn of the Institute for Global Economic Growth and Andrew Quinlan of the Center for Freedom and Prosperity in judging the videos.

The winning video, entitled "Lilliputian Liberty," makes a powerful case for decentralization. It describes the hypothetical United States of Lilliput, where Lilliputians learn that centralized decision-making by government results in unhappiness and conflict. Submitted on behalf of the University of Virginia's Young Americans for Liberty chapter by John Woods and Ian Downie, the video's creators will be awarded the $1,000 first prize.

"We are pleased with the result of our video contest," said CF&P President Andrew Quinlan. "We look forward to growing participation in the future, and expect even more great videos demonstrating the importance of economic liberty. New media is increasingly important in public policy education, and it is the next generation that must be most prepared to advance the twin causes of freedom and prosperity," he concluded.

Dan Mitchell of the Cato Institute remarked that, "Contestants displayed a lot of creativity, both in terms of production and concepts. It was very difficult to pick finalists, much less select the top three."

All entrants demonstrated a unique appreciation of economic liberty, but only eight – the top 3 videos plus 5 honorable mentions - could be awarded recognition.
